How to Rank in AI Overviews and ChatGPT: GEO for UAE Businesses

AI Overviews appear on roughly half of Google searches, and cited sources earn meaningfully more clicks than uncited competitors. Meanwhile a growing share of research starts in ChatGPT or Perplexity rather than Google at all. Getting cited in generated answers is becoming a distinct discipline, generative engine optimisation, and almost nobody in the UAE is optimising for it yet.

That gap is the opportunity.

How AI answers choose sources

Generative engines do not rank ten links. They synthesise an answer and cite a handful of sources. Selection appears to favour content that is:

  • Structurally clear. Clean headings, direct answers, logical hierarchy
  • Directly responsive. Answers the question in the first sentence rather than after three paragraphs of preamble
  • Specific and factual. Numbers, dates, named entities, concrete detail
  • Corroborated. Consistent with other credible sources
  • Attributable. Clear authorship and organisational identity

What to change on your site

Answer first, elaborate second. Put a direct two-sentence answer immediately under each heading. Traditional copywriting builds to a conclusion. Write the conclusion first, then support it.

Use question-shaped headings. "How much does SEO cost in Dubai?" is more extractable than "Our pricing philosophy".

Add specific numbers. "AED 4,000 to 12,000 monthly" gets quoted. "Affordable pricing tailored to your needs" never will.

Implement schema properly. FAQPage, Article with author, Organization and LocalBusiness. Structured data is now a citation signal, not just a rich-result feature.

Establish entity identity. Consistent business name, address and description everywhere, plus a well-marked-up About page. AI engines need to understand who you are before citing you.

Publish genuine expertise. Synthesised generic content is exactly what AI can already generate. First-hand experience, real data and local specifics are what it cannot, and what gets cited.

The UAE angle

Location-specific queries are where local businesses can win quickly. "How much does a website cost in Dubai" or "do I need Arabic SEO in the UAE" are questions where a credible local source with real numbers is genuinely more useful than a global generic answer.

Publish those answers, with real figures, and you become the citable source.

What not to do

Do not stuff content with questions you answer thinly. Do not publish AI-generated summaries of other people's content, which is what most competitors are doing and what these systems are increasingly good at ignoring.
